Coping with "terry-collar" work

topic posted Wed, October 29, 2003 - 5:43 PM by  Jan
Hi folks --

I'm living in a city where I don't really know anyone -- I moved here b/c my partner got into graduate school. I love being able to telecommute; it means that my time is my own, and that I can work when I want, where I want.

But doesn't it get lonely working from home sometimes? Don't you miss the social interaction that can happen in an office environment? Do you make sure that you shower and make yourself presentable every morning, just to stay in practice? Do you have videochat meetings? (Thank you, iChat!) Do you work from coffeeshops or bookstores, where there are people around?

Mostly, I'm just curious -- for those of you that already telecommute full time, what do you do to keep yourself socially active?

I work from home part time as a tech consultant for a non-profit/government service organization. I get out a lot mostly with other moms. Since I am able to take the kids to school and back, I can meet & chat with other like minded people. It helps that I am on the Upper West Side in Manhattan, where there are a lot of work at home types & I don't have to drive to find a place where people gather. It is easy to find a coffee shop near school where people I know hang out. I don't remember the last time I went to Starbucks & didn't know anyone. Of course being all busy people, its only time for a coffee & brief chat, but it is enough. Other than that, there is sites like this and another moms site that I started with years ago when I was pregnant. I also am an active volunteer, so I meet people that way as well.
