I live in a warehouse with 5 musicians/geeks.. I have to
lock my office door and wear headphones when I'm working late..

How do other people deal with working around roommates?

Not sure what the solution is for that one. Last summer, I sublet a room in a place with a bunch of annoying college kids, and it was by far the least productive telecommuting situation I've been in.

Headphones definitely help, but roommate noise could be a pain in the ass when I had to be on the phone for conference calls. I ended up taking my laptop to coffee shops a lot.

I guess it all depends on your roommates and your relationships. With musician types, it's a hard balance to find between your right to peace and their right to be loud.

If you want to get extreme, you could try sound-proofing your office or slipping them sedatives.

I have an overly developed ability to screen things out most of the time (just ask my wife and kids) -- it usually all just fades into background for me. But there are times when the noise from the rest of the house starts creeping in on my consciousness; then I:

      (1) close the door.
      (2) crank up work-friendly music (the Hives work for me).
      (3) Hunch over the keyboard and go into tunnel vision.
